I had this same problem myself. I dunno how it applies to the original
ignition switch, but all of the aftermarket ones including the one on my
FJ40 have both an accessory (ACC) and an ignition (IG or IGN) terminal. The
ACC terminal gets juice while the key is in the run position, while IGN gets
juice while in run or start position. This is so that you aren't drawing
power to run the radio or whatever while turning over the starter. I
connected the ignition wire to the ACC terminal cuz I thought it was the
same thing, the only time it would fire was when the key was in run. That
meant it only started when I let off the key, which was perplexing for a
little while. Switched the wire over to the IGN terminal and it works fine
now. As a matter of fact, the ignition and the starter are the only things
on my Cruiser running off the key right now, as there is nothing else on it
besides lights. Something to check, it describes your symptoms exactly. HTH.
