If you're in a dirty environment, i.e. somewhere that a Land Cruiser
is likely to go, I've come to believe that the good old paper filters
are the way to go. They're cheap, filter fairly well, their
'performance' problems don't make any difference for an off-road
vehicle, and the don't shed foam into the engine.
The gauze filters, TRD or K&N, are for the street/track, which has
nice clean air to begin with.
For the record, I run the Amsoil oiled foam filter in TippyR. But I
also replace the engine in that truck more often than I change the air
filter, so....
